What is emotional intelligence? (EQ)
In his seminal work Emotional Intelligence (1995) Daniel Goleman defined EQ as “the capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, and for managing emotions in ourselves and in our relationships.”
Research shows that in all job roles EQ is twice as important as IQ. And in senior job roles a huge 90% of the difference between people that are average at their jobs and people that excel is down to EQ factors. Self and people awareness are the main things to look at when trying to determine your EQ.
How ‘self-smart’ are you?
Are you self-aware, priding yourself on recognising and understanding your own moods, your emotions and what drives you? Are you able to self-regulate, managing your impulsive feelings and uncomfortable emotions well? Can you control impulsive feelings and moods, and do you hold yourself accountable for meeting objectives? If you can answer yes to all these questions it is a good indicator of high EQ.
The other side to self-awareness is how ‘people smart’ you are. Are you known for listening to your team, reading their emotional cues and empathizing? Or are you likely to misinterpret someone’s emotional response? Do you understand the many different emotional responses other people have? Do you have the ability to diffuse awkward and emotionally charged situations according to the emotional response of others? And are you socially proficient, thriving on interactions at networking events and capable of managing your team relationships well? Again, answering yes to these questions is a great indicator of high EQ.
