Has email been dealt a Yammer blow?
How do you use Social media within your organisation?
With the proliferation of social media platforms, some commentators have predicted the end of email. Sites like Yammer are certainly useful for non-urgent matters and many larger organisations have introduced social media for internal communication.
For some organisations it is clear that the problems of internal email overload can be eased by switching to Yammer et al. This approach does have disadvantages though as non “early adopters” may struggle with social media as a communications concept.
Yet, while social media’s star is rising, email is still the first choice for communicating externally.
Email has been around longer and is more widely accepted. In the vast majority of organisations it is a reliable medium for both short fast messages and medium/long detailed communications. Most employees have company email accounts and will still default to email when communicating with customers or suppliers.
The problems of internal email overload are best tackled with professional email etiquette training.
The swift introduction of social media in an organisation may cause more confusion – and require extensive training – unless the company has a robust email culture and good email practices. However email will remain the fundamental method of communication for most businesses at least for the foreseeable future.
Statistics have consistently proved that email volumes are set to increase and the prevalence of social media shows no signs of reversing this trend.
