Hybrid working - just because you can Zoom, it doesn’t mean you should
The new world of hybrid working is a novelty for all of us. A year on we are discovering the benefits and draw-backs of working remotely and meeting through video conferencing. The positives are clear – less travel time, fewer stressful commutes, the ability to connect with anyone, anywhere, at any time.
Increasingly, organisations are coming to Emailogic for support to alleviate the downsides of remote working. People at all levels are having back-to-back Zoom or Teams calls, and at the end the day they are both exhausted and frustrated. They’ve been in meetings for eight hours, but what has really been achieved? People are beginning to feel like busy fools.
We have trained thousands of people in better virtual communication over the last decade. Increasingly, while we are advising teams to use virtual communication tools expertly, we are also advising people to be more conscious in their use of video conferencing. Just because you can Zoom someone it doesn’t necessarily mean you should. Maybe an email or phone call would be more appropriate? Or even a face-to-face meeting, especially if you are innovating.
Equally, just because you can work from home it may not always be the best option. If you need to meet to create new products or to build team spirit, you may want to think about booking a meeting room in the office.
You really need to consider what you are trying to achieve before you send out yet another Zoom or Teams meeting invite. As the old saying goes, work smarter not harder.
